Ferris to raise Roscommon eviction in the Dáil
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture
Martin Ferris TD will attempt to raise a planned eviction in Roscommon in the
Dáil tomorrow.
Speaking today Deputy Ferris said;
“The eviction is taking place in order to
facilitate the re-possession of a farm which is mortgaged to a company
controlled by Ronald Weisz. I have on many occasions over the past number of
years drawn attention to the manner in which the companies concerned have
acted.
“I have also called for legislation to
ensure that people with convictions in relation to financial irregularities in
this jurisdiction or abroad are prevented from getting licenses. Mr. Weisz has convictions in both the
United States and here.
“There is a clear need for the legislation
to be updated in order to address this issue and I will again be pressing for a
meaningful response from the Government in relation to this. Sub-prime high
interest mortgage companies are by far the most aggressive pursuers of people
for debts, even where the person in debt has made reasonable efforts to settle.
“Tomorrow, the Sheriff is being sent to evict a Roscommon farmer
from his land so that his land can be taken off him. Local Sinn Féin
activists will be among those from the community who will be there to protest
at the eviction and to extend their solidarity to the family concerned.”
