Speaking at the launch of the Financial Local Property Tax Repeal Bill Deputy Doherty said:
"This bill is a key part of Sinn Fein’s alternative to austerity for lower and middle income families. These families have borne the brunt of austerity budget after austerity budget under Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael/Labour. They need a break."
"This tax was signed off on by Fianna Fáil and has been taken up by Fine Gael and Labour. There is a wide range of alternatives as Sinn Féin has consistently pointed out."
"The method of collection of this new tax is brutal. Those who are accepted as being unable to pay face a 4% penalty next year while those who can’t pay but are not recognised as being unable to pay face a 8% penalty. The government will raid salaries, social welfare payments and pensions to extract this tax on the family home."
"Sinn Féin in government will repeal this tax.
Our bill would refund the tax paid by citizens for the year in which it is scrapped. We will continue to campaign across the state to win support for this bill."
In support of this campaign, members of the Willie Brock Cumann in Mountmellick will be calling on householders to sign a petition in support of the Sinn Féin Bill to repeal the unjust Home/ Property Tax.
Signatures collected in the 26 counties will be presented on your behalf at Dáil Éireann.
The Central Statistics Office estimates that 700,000 people are in poverty and 5,000 are homeless!
ReplyDeleteSo where does this Fine Gael/Labour Government think the money is coming from to pay these ridiculous property charges ?
The government don't care how many people live in poverty or how many people are homeless. Just think about it, people are losing their family home every day of the week in this country because they can`t afford to pay their present mortgage. What do these clowns do to help these people?, They introduce a property tax, and an unfair property tax at that. They take more money from these already stressed citizens. They are driving people over the edge and into ill health and for me this is the real concern. The social and health implications on community and family life in this country because of the governments actions is the elephant in the room and will be the rock many of our fellow citizens will parish on if this madness is not stopped. I have not mentioned the impact this madness is having on the lives of our young people and children because my blood will boil over with anger. But they are suffering in many ways and I can say that without fear of contradiction.
ReplyDeleteVery succinctly put Adam and am very surprised not see more comments !
