SINN FÉIN MOUNTMELLICK

Damning report by EPA
on Laois CC
 May / Bealtaine 2013

Mountmellick Sinn Féin highlighted LCC’S failure to tackle the problems of excessive hardness, lead levels, discolouration & fluoride in drinking water last year.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in their recent Drinking Water Audit Report on Laois County Council stated: “The Council must urgently develop proper countywide systems and procedures to ensure a reliable delivery of clean and wholesome drinking water countywide”

The recent 13 page audit details problems such as:
A lack of record keeping & knowledge of drinking water supplies, treatment processes & treatment equipment.
No formal raw water monitoring for public supplies.
No register of water treatment plants dosing the supply with fluoride or procedures
for notifying the HSE & EPA if dosing is exceeded.
No programmes to flush mains pipes or clean reservoirs.
No programme or identification of areas for the removal of
lead communication pipes.
No disinfection equipment register to ensure that consumers receive properly disinfected water.

Responding to the EPA audit Brian Stanley TD said “The above are just some of the problems the EPA highlighted in their audit. These shortcomings are a concern at a time when water quality in the county is being questioned by many people. I have contacted the County Manager, to request that all the recommendations made by the EPA are implemented without delay.”

On 9 May Brian Stanley TD published the Health (Fluoridation of Water Supplies) (Repeal) Bill 2013 to stop water fluoridation.

Brian Stanley holds a confidential clinic on the last Saturday of each month at 3.15pm in Mountmellick Town Hall.  Or phone his constituency office on 05786 62851.

Sinn Féin conducted a survey asking residents of 150 homes across the town about their drinking water supply. The results were shocking: 96% of people questioned were very dissatisfied with complaints of excessive hardness, discolouration & chemical smells from the water supply.

Replacement of household equipment due to limescale:
78% bought 1 or more electric kettles every year.
46% had replaced shower heads or shower systems.
37% bought one or more washing machines / parts last year.
16% replaced their dishwashers & many people no longer use them because of the cost of softeners.
64% of people buy bottled water every week.
Average cost per week for water is €14. €728 per year.
For larger families the cost is €20 a week. €1,040 per year.
19% of people suffer from very dry skin or eczema which they attribute to showering in hard water.

 Sinn Féin Says:
“These findings confirm what we have been
saying from the outset of this campaign.
People are angry at having to spend so much
on replacing appliances through no fault of
their own. Many people expressed the view that
they are not prepared to pay for water of this
  quality.”

Recently Sinn Féin Cllr. Stephen Lynch was successful in getting a motion passed at Mountmellick Town Council calling for the end of the fluoridation of the public water supply.
