Colreavy welcomes
strategic framework on wind energy projects
Deputy Michael
Colreavy, Sinn Féin spokesperson on communications, energy and natural
resources, has welcomed the announcement that a strategic framework will be
published on wind energy projects.
Speaking today,
Deputy Colreavy said:
“Sinn Féin has
continuously called for a proper national strategy for the development of
renewable energy projects. The introduction of a strategic framework is
certainly a step in the right direction.
“Many communities,
especially in the midland area, have become increasingly worried about the
erection of a massive number of wind turbines close to their homes. They are
afraid that there will be no proper planning regulations of these turbines.
“Sinn Féin fully
supports the development of renewable energy and believes that it is the only
sustainable form of energy production in Ireland.
“However, it requires
a national strategy to ensure that we are able to reap the rewards of renewable energy potential.
“Ireland’s renewable
energy targets also need to be addressed first before the state begins to
export energy to Britain.
“We are legally bound
to reach a renewable energy target of 20% by 2020. This needs to be our primary
focus before exporting energy to Britain.”
