Deputy Michael Colreavy today attended the EUFORES
inter-parliamentary meeting on renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Deputy Colreavy said:
“Sinn Féin is fully committed to
the development of renewable energy.
However, Ireland has much work to do to
achieve its renewable energy target of 20% of all energy by 2020.
“The signing of a memorandum of understanding between the
British government and Ireland to export Irish renewable energy from Ireland to
Britain should not hamper an increase in energy in from renewable sources in
the Irish market.
“The development of a major wind farm in the midlands
solely for export of energy to Britain is the wrong approach.
“Community benefit is of major importance in the
development of renewable energy projects in Ireland.
“It is imperative that the minister introduce a National Wind
Energy Strategy, including adequate planning regulations, before the
development of any wind energy projects.”
