Ireland abstained from a vote in the UN calling for international law to be observed in Palestine. Basically, giving Israel a pass to break international law and continue to commit war crimes. All EU states did. Irish people do not agree with how our government voted.

Israel has right to completely destroy Gaza, right-wing rabbi says

A right-leaning Israeli rabbi has issued a religious ruling stating that the total destruction of Gaza is justified if military leaders consider it necessary. Rabbi Dvor Lior is considered to be one of the most extreme far-right religious leaders.

Lior wrote that during any war where the Jewish people deem themselves to be under attack, they are legally allowed to fight back against the nation from which the attack came from. 

“Therefore, in a time of war, the attacked nation is permitted to punish the enemy population with whatever measures it deems proper, like blocking supplies or electricity. It may bomb the entire area based on the judgment of the war minister and not wantonly put soldiers at risk,” he wrote, adding that “deterrent measures to exterminate the enemy” are allowed, Haaretz reported. 

However, his comments did not go unnoticed from those who disagree with his views. After his ruling was published, Mertz Zahava Gal-On, head of a left-wing Israeli party, asked Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein to launch an investigation.

“Rabbi Dov Lior’s racist comments long ago lost the protection of the right to free expression. These remarks follow his racist comments through the years, among them his many comments before the murder of [Yitzhak] Rabin and support for Baruch Goldstein,” Gal-On wrote to Weinstein. Goldstein was the man who gunned down 29 Muslim worshippers in Hebron in 1994. 

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza over the past 15 days has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 600 Palestinians, many of them women and children, with more than 4,500 wounded. 

In comparison, around 30 Israelis have been killed in the war, although Hamas puts the figure at 40. 
Lior is a staunch supporter of the settlement movement; he believes that all land between the Jordan and the Mediterranean belongs to the Jewish race, and that Palestinians have no right to live there. 

"All of those who believe in the Torah know that this land was promised solely to these people. There is no room for another national entity in this place. There has never been a state belonging to another people here. It belongs exclusively to the Jewish people," Lior wrote, as quoted by Deutsche Welle. 

Lior was the spiritual teacher of Yigal Amir, who assassinated Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995. Amir was opposed to Rabin’s signing of the Oslo peace accords. 

Lior was arrested and questioned in 2011 for endorsing a book sanctioning the killing of non-Jews.

Expel Israeli Ambassador over Gaza slaughter - Adams‏

Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD has called for a diplomatic offensive by the Irish Government to encourage the Government of Israel to end it's military onslaught against the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.

Mr Adams welcomed the decision by The Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan to meet the Israeli Ambassador following the escalation of the Israeli Government's military offensive in Gaza but said the time had come to expel the Ambassador.

Speaking today Gerry Adams said:

"Today marks the 17th anniversary of the IRA cessation in 1997. This is a timely reminder of the efficacy of dialogue and inclusive negotiation as an alternative to protracted armed conflict.

"That principle is as applicable today to the situation in the Middle East as it was to Ireland in 1997.

"The decision of the Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan to meet the Israeli Ambassador, following the escalation of the Israeli Government's military onslaught against the besieged population of the Gaza Strip, is welcome.

"However the time has long past for merely expressing concern to a Government that is clearly oblivious to the outrage of the international community at their actions in Gaza.

"Irish citizens have been upset and angered at the ongoing killing of men, women and children in Gaza.

"All armed actions, including attacks from Gaza must stop.

"In 2009, following a fact finding mission to Gaza I published a report which proposed nine immediate steps to help resolve the conflict. They were:

1. All armed actions and acts of violence should cease.

2. An inclusive process of negotiation should commence in which all democratic mandates are respected, clear objectives are set, and there is a fixed timeframe.

3. The building of the separation wall should stop as a first step which would see its demolition.

4. The siege of the Gaza strip should end.

5. An immediate and intensive programme of reconstruction and economic development must commence.

6. The ongoing Israeli colonisation of the West Bank and the building of settlements should stop.

7. The occupation of the West Bank and the denial of freedom of movement to Palestinians in the West Bank and in the Gaza strip, and between the West Bank and Gaza, should end as part of the process to decolonise the West Bank.

8. Mutual and expeditious co-operation between Palestinians and Israelis to enhance public safety and security should commence.

9. UN resolutions and international law should be enforced.

"Five years later, none of these steps have been taken and the situation has deteriorated once again.

"The decision by the Israeli Government, in the face of international anger, to escalate its military offensive by launching a ground offensive requires a firm and resolute response by the Irish Government, which must now expel the Israeli Ambassador.

"The Irish Government should also push for the immediate suspension of the EU’s preferential trade agreements (Israel-EU Association Agreement and Euro-Med Agreement) with Israel."

Call for a revolution in Ireland

If you are horrified by the actions of that oppressive regime in Israel then you can make a difference and you can voice your displeasure at the atrocities being carried against the Palestinians. In the 1980s, people of good conscience boycotted all goods from South Africa because of Apartheid. Twelve Dunnes workers stood up and said enough. They refused to have anything to do with produce from South Africa that they took to the streets and went on strike for two and a half years. What is happening today is no different. Israel commits atrocities yet they still sell their products here.

Three key features characterise Israeli apartheid:

* Four million Palestinians in the Occupied Territories lack the right to vote for the government that controls their lives through a military occupation. In addition to controlling the borders, air space, water, tax revenues, and other vital matters pertaining to the Occupied Territories, Israel alone issues the identity cards that determine the ability of Palestinians to work and their freedom of movement.

* About 1.2 million Palestinian Israelis, who make up 20 percent, or one-fifth, of Israel’s population, have second-class citizenship within Israel, which defines itself as a Jewish state rather than a state for all its citizens. More than 20 provisions of Israel’s principal laws discriminate, either directly or indirectly, against non-Jews, according to Adalah: The Legal Center for Minority Rights in Israel.

* Millions of Palestinians remain refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and elsewhere, unable to return to their former homes and land in present-day Israel, even though the right of return for refugees is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We thought it was wrong then and it's wrong now. Israel is carrying out apartheid on Palestinian land, oppressing and terrorising the Palestinian people on a vast scale and it must be stopped.

If you wish to make a stand, a real stand, not like the numpties in the Dáil who say and do nothing, then hit them hardest....
