FLUORIDE - Mountmellick SF Leads the Way!

A motion by Sinn Féin Councillor Stephen Lynch to The Mountmellick Town Council was passed unanimously on 11th March 2013

THIS COUNCIL CALLS ON THE GOVERNMENT TO END WATER FLUORIDATION."

1. 98% of the countries in Europe have banned water fluoridation because of health and ethical grounds.

2. A growing amount of evidence links fluoride to cancer, osteoporosis and thyroid damage and dental experts warn against giving this water to infants.

3. We are told by the HSE that adding fluoride to water is the best way of treating and preventing tooth decay yet we have the worst dental health statistics in the EU.

CRONYISM STILL THRIVES !

At the outset of the present government The Fine Gael/Labour coalition vowed to end cronyism and then having slept on it, they proceeded immediately to give state jobs to their political friends.

It is easy now to see why the Labour ministers & their cohorts are so out of touch with the electorate and the every day financial problems that are crippling our society - when sackfuls of loot are so easy to obtain for special cronies.

WHY WE NEED A WEALTH TAX

Sinn Féin is holding a series of public meetings to give information on the implications of the Property / Home Tax in County Laois.

The meetings will be hosted by Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley.

Why we need a wealth tax - 

1 The latest figures published by the Central Statistic Office show that the number of people in poverty in Ireland has now reached a record level of 733,000

2 The recent number of calls made to the St Vincent De Paul Charity’s four main centres in Dublin, Cork, Galway, and the Mid-West amounted to 97,610. 

3 The national average figures for those children who go to school hungry is one in five.

In County Laois approximately 10% of children in local urban areas are attending ‘breakfast clubs’ in school, set up because children are coming to school hungry.

Hungry children are unable to study properly.

Hunger stunts childrens’ growth, both mentally and physically.

Hunger can increase unruly behaviour making concentrating more difficult for all pupils.

4 The government proposal to tax child allowance will further increase the numbers of children who are hungry.

Up to 400,000 parents of nearly 700,000 children will be hit by the change if the Government goes ahead with the plan. 

5 The Property / Home Tax will further hit parents who are struggling to feed their children.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said that no child should be going to school hungry.

Is our Taoiseach actually aware of the hunger and poverty experienced by people in his own country?

Uniting Ireland: Economic Points

* The border acts as a barrier to investment and growth, which stifles the economic potential of the whole of Ireland.

* If we are to improve the economic position of all the people of Ireland we need to consider how to address the limitations of the Border in a real sense. To do so means considering the island as a whole, through a full and detailed economic strategy.

* Currently there are useful but limited attempts to maximise business opportunities in spite of the border. We need to move beyond this towards mew ways of maximising the economic potential of the whole island.

* A new start is needed in Ireland if we are to change our politics, our economy and our whole society  for the better. We can't do that without examining a fundamental issue- the way we govern ourselves on the whole of Ireland.

* Claims that the north is completely reliant on the British state have been greatly exaggerated. These claims have been used as a barrier to Irish Unity.

* Unionism and the British claim that the North requires £10.5 bn from the British state in order to economically survive, this is not true.

* The British Government allocates £17 bn to the Executive and another half billion is spent on council services. A  total of £17.5 billion.

* Revenue generated in the North has been estimated by the Department of Finance and Personnel to be £12.7 bn.

* The real gap therefore between what the British actually allocate and is raised in the north is £4.8 billion not £10.5 billion.

I would like to wish all party members and supporters a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. A huge thank you to everyone for all of their invaluable hard work and dedication throughout the year. 2012 has been a very successful year for Laois Sinn Féin.  The party has very ambitious plans for 2013 and we are very confident that our goals and objectives  will be achieved through the continued support and determination of each and every party member and supporter across the county.

Message from the chairperson of William Brock Cumann, Sinn Féin Mountmellick:

"2012” has been a busy and productive year for Sinn Féin in Mountmellick. 
Our membership has grown beyond our expectations and the skills and knowledge we now have at our disposal puts us in a strong position to challenge the establishment parties and the warped brand of politics they represent.

In 2013 Sinn Féin must stand shoulder to shoulder with all sectors of our society now under attack from the failed policy of austerity, a policy dictated and designed by our European masters and forced on the Irish people by a puppet government. 
We must provide leadership and a voice to ensure that these punitive measures
that have caused so much hurt and anxiety are totally and utterly reversed.

Let us not underestimate the task ahead. 

Our political opponents are fully aware of the advances made by republicans in recent years and they will do everything in their collective power to stop further advances.   
Expect therefore, in the months ahead, a concerted effort to belittle us, to undermine us and to isolate us.
All this because they fear us .

We must move into 2013 first and foremost as proud republicans confident that we can rise to the challenge ahead. 
Go back to your respective communities, organise and give leadership as only
republicans can. 
Provide the people with a real alternative to the discredited ideology of 'profit before people' that is destroying the very fabric of Irish society.

Connolly once said

" We believe in constitutional action in normal times; We believe in
revolutionary action in exceptional times. "

These are exceptional times.
Bobby Sands in his writings said that:

" everyone, republican or otherwise, has his/her part to play in the
struggle no matter how big or how small that part may be."

Simple yet powerful messages from two of our great revolutionary leaders, 
which, if fully understood and applied to our present set of circumstances, will I believe realise Bobby`s vision, that our revenge will be the laughter of our children."
