Would The Labour Party Have Agreed To This In 1913?

September 5th, 2013 - Pearse Doherty TD
Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said the government has once again failed to reel in top bankers. Deputy Doherty made this comment after CEOs from Ulster Bank, Bank of Ireland, AIB and PTSB confirmed to him that not a single banker earning over €100,000 in any state-owned bank has taken a pay-cut in the last year.
Deputy Doherty said:
“Minister Noonan spent €120,000 of taxpayer’s money on the Mercer Report. He then committed to cut banks’ payrolls by 6-10%. In April this year under pressure from Sinn Féin An Taoiseach Enda Kenny said that he expected this to ‘include a substantial contribution from the bank leadership on pay and pensions’. None of the state-owner banks’ proposals includes any cuts to the basic salary to the top earners.
“This year the Finance Committee heard that the three state-owned banks have sent out over 10,000 letters threatening repossession. Earlier this year Minister Noonan refused to use his shares to block the €843,000 remuneration package of Bank of Ireland CEO Richie Boucher. Those two facts show how this government’s banking strategy is a failure.
“The government has failed abysmally to stand up to the banks and their arrogant leadership. There are 2,716 employees at these banks who earn packages over €100,000, over 100 of whom earn more than €300,000. Yet not one of these employees has taken a cut to their basic salary.
“This stands in stark contrast to the austerity this government inflicts to people the length and breadth of the state. Minister Noonan needs to be reminded that the people own PTSB and AIB and a 15% share in Bank of Ireland. He needs to let these banks know that a payroll cut that doesn’t hit the highest earners is unacceptable.”

Sinn Féin Launches Seanad Abolition Campaign

September 3rd, 2013
Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty has today launched his party's campaign for the abolition of the Seanad. Speaking at the launch in Dublin this morning Deputy Doherty said fairness, democracy and equality of citizenship demand that the current Seanad be abolished.
He said;
"The cronyism and the elitism that are synonymous with the Seanad has fostered the type of politics that has brought this state to its knees.
"In the last two-and-a-half years, the Seanad has supported the government on every single occasion, including the introduction of the property tax, cuts to disability payments and the promissory note deal which is costing the tax payer €30 billion.
"The Seanad has promoted political cronies and allies rather than ideas or visions. And Fianna Fáil, who now seek to preserve the Seanad, is the party which has done the most to reinforce the perception of the Seanad as a hot house of cronyism.
"The system of Taoiseach’s nominees in particular during the Bertie Ahern era was used to promote close political allies and cronies rather than doing anything to bring more diversity into the political system.
"It was not used to increase the number of women in the Oireachtas or to ensure minorities were represented. In the main it has been a safety net for those who failed to get elected to the Dáil.
"The most damning feature of the Seanad is the elitism, inequality and discrimination that is at its core. There can be no place in a real republic, based on equality, for an elected office to which only a tiny percentage of the population have the right to vote.
"By restricting votes to an elite of those educated in a number of select colleges and City and County Councillors, the Seanad is anomaly in a modern democracy. It runs in the face of the core principal that all citizens are equal. It is obviously wrong to most people that a house of parliament would discriminate against citizens based on where they were educated.
"Sinn Féin seeks to build a New Republic on this island based on equality for all citizens. We want to see an end to privilege and elitism, and to the cronyism and influence of vested interests that have so damaged politics in this country.
"Fairness, democracy and equality of citizenship demand that the current Seanad be abolished. Sinn Féin is appealing to voters to get out and vote in this referendum on October 4th and to Vote Yes."

Sinn Féin Annual Pre Budget Think In

September 1st, 2013 - Pearse Doherty TD
Sinn Féin has announced details of the party's annual think-in, before the resumption of the Dáil on 18 September. It will take place next Friday, 6 September 2013 in Carlingford, Co Louth.
Announcing details of the event, Sinn Féin finance spokesperson and TD for Donegal South West, Pearse Doherty said:
"Between now and Budget Day, Sinn Fein will focus on increasing pressure on the government to ensure that fairness is at the core of Budget 2014.
"Sinn Féin will use its position in the Dáil to defend struggling families. By providing alternatives Sinn Féin has shown we are a constructive opposition.
"We will not oppose merely for the sake of opposition. We will judge issues on their merits – as we did on the Children’s Referendum and now in the referendum on the Seanad
"Last year’s budget failed the fairness test. Households are struggling under the burden of the property tax, rising household bills and in many cases a fall in income due to the loss of employment or reduced hours or wages.
"The Fine Gael-Labour government is killing the economy by continuing to take money off families which they would otherwise spend in the local economy.
"For others the withdrawal of services such as respite care is causing huge hardship. Sinn Féin will provide real political leadership in the new Dáil term.
“We will not allow this government to get away with targeting ordinary people while doing nothing to tackle issues such as the relentless tide of emigration from Ireland and the plight of those families in mortgage distress.
"Key issues to be discussed at next Friday's think-in include discussion around finalising Sinn Féin's alternative budget, particularly looking at how the burden on struggling families can be reduced.
"We will show how the property tax can be abolished, how we can deal with the costs of education and the position of carers and those with disabilities who are having services withdrawn.
"The think-in will also discuss Irish unity, national reconciliation and dealing with the legacy of conflict.
"Invited guests include Basil McCrea and John McCallister of new unionist party, NI21 who will speak about their own perspectives on these issues.
"An update on Sinn Féin's campaign for a Yes vote in the referendum on the Seanad will be given and we will discuss Sinn Féin's preparations for local and EU elections next year.

Billionaires Dumping Stocks, Economist Knows Why

Saturday, 31 Aug 2013 09:37 AM
By Newsmax Wire

Despite the 6.5% stock market rally over the last three months, a handful of billionaires are quietly dumping their American stocks . . . and fast.

Warren Buffett, who has been a cheerleader for U.S. stocks for quite some time, is dumping shares at an alarming rate. He recently complained of “disappointing performance” in dyed-in-the-wool American companies like Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, and Kraft Foods.

In the latest filing for Buffett’s holding company Berkshire Hathaway, Buffett has been drastically reducing his exposure to stocks that depend on consumer purchasing habits. Berkshire sold roughly 19 million shares of Johnson & Johnson, and reduced his overall stake in “consumer product stocks” by 21%. Berkshire Hathaway also sold its entire stake in California-based computer parts supplier Intel.

With 70% of the U.S. economy dependent on consumer spending, Buffett’s apparent lack of faith in these companies’ future prospects is worrisome.

Unfortunately Buffett isn’t alone.

Fellow billionaire John Paulson, who made a fortune betting on the subprime mortgage meltdown, is clearing out of U.S. stocks too. During the second quarter of the year, Paulson’s hedge fund, Paulson & Co., dumped 14 million shares of JPMorgan Chase. The fund also dumped its entire position in discount retailer Family Dollar and consumer-goods maker Sara Lee.

Finally, billionaire George Soros recently sold nearly all of his bank stocks, including shares of JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Goldman Sachs. Between the three banks, Soros sold more than a million shares.

So why are these billionaires dumping their shares of U.S. companies?

After all, the stock market is still in the midst of its historic rally. Real estate prices have finally leveled off, and for the first time in five years are actually rising in many locations. And the unemployment rate seems to have stabilized.

It’s very likely that these professional investors are aware of specific research that points toward a massive market correction, as much as 90%.

One such person publishing this research is Robert Wiedemer, an esteemed economist and author of the New York Times best-selling book Aftershock.

Before you dismiss the possibility of a 90% drop in the stock market as unrealistic, consider Wiedemer’s credentials.

In 2006, Wiedemer and a team of economists accurately predicted the collapse of the U.S. housing market, equity markets, and consumer spending that almost sank the United States. They published their research in the book America’s Bubble Economy.

The book quickly grabbed headlines for its accuracy in predicting what many thought would never happen, and quickly established Wiedemer as a trusted voice.

A columnist at Dow Jones said the book was “one of those rare finds that not only predicted the subprime credit meltdown well in advance, it offered Main Street investors a winning strategy that helped avoid the forty percent losses that followed . . .”

The chief investment strategist at Standard & Poor’s said that Wiedemer’s track record “demands our attention.”

And finally, the former CFO of Goldman Sachs said Wiedemer’s “prescience in (his) first book lends credence to the new warnings. This book deserves our attention.”

In the interview for his latest blockbuster Aftershock, Wiedemer says the 90% drop in the stock market is “a worst-case scenario,” and the host quickly challenged this claim.

Wiedemer calmly laid out a clear explanation of why a large drop of some sort is a virtual certainty.

It starts with the reckless strategy of the Federal Reserve to print a massive amount of money out of thin air in an attempt to stimulate the economy.

“These funds haven’t made it into the markets and the economy yet. But it is a mathematical certainty that once the dam breaks, and this money passes through the reserves and hits the markets, inflation will surge,” said Wiedemer.

“Once you hit 10% inflation, 10-year Treasury bonds lose about half their value. And by 20%, any value is all but gone. Interest rates will increase dramatically at this point, and that will cause real estate values to collapse. And the stock market will collapse as a consequence of these other problems.”

And this is where Wiedemer explains why Buffett, Paulson, and Soros could be dumping U.S. stocks:

“Companies will be spending more money on borrowing costs than business expansion costs. That means lower profit margins, lower dividends, and less hiring. Plus, more layoffs.”

No investors, let alone billionaires, will want to own stocks with falling profit margins and shrinking dividends. So if that’s why Buffett, Paulson, and Soros are dumping stocks, they have decided to cash out early and leave Main Street investors holding the bag.

But Main Street investors don’t have to see their investment and retirement accounts decimated for the second time in five years.

Wiedemer’s video interview also contains a comprehensive blueprint for economic survival that’s really commanding global attention.

Now viewed over 40 million times, it was initially screened for a relatively small, private audience. But the overwhelming amount of feedback from viewers who felt the interview should be widely publicized came with consequences, as various online networks repeatedly shut it down and affiliates refused to house the content.

“People were sitting up and taking notice, and they begged us to make the interview public so they could easily share it,” said Newsmax Financial Publisher Aaron DeHoog.

“Our real concern,” DeHoog added, “is the effect even if only half of Wiedemer’s predictions come true.

“That’s a scary thought for sure. But we want the average American to be prepared, and that is why we will continue to push this video to as many outlets as we can. We want the word to spread.”
